Therapeutic actions:

Postinor-2 or Levongestrel is a drug used for extreme contraception meaning that the preparation causes an early abortion by preventing the implantation of the fertilized ovule in the wombs epitelium. Postinor is one of the first preparations used for such a purpose. Postinor-2 works by 2 mechanisms firstly it slows or stops the ovulation which can prevent conception from taking place. However if conception had taken place the preparation changes the endometrium structure in the womb unaibling the fertilized egg implantation.

Indications:

Emergency contraception like Postinor is used within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse to interrupt the unwanted pregnancy.

Contraindications and Cautions:

The preparation is not recommended for frequent use. Can be used once every 6 months. A elevated risk of developing extra-uterine pregnancy exists when using extreme contraceptives. The drug is not recommended for frequent use due to high possibility of side-effects and less effectiveness compared with other oral contraceptives.

The drug should not be used if you have such conditions: Liver disorders

  • gall duct disorders
  • hypersensitivity to the components of the preparation
  • Period of sexual development
  • Pregnancy
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Thrombosis
Side Effects:
