Therapeutic actions:

Bismuth has several actions in the gut. It forms a coating over ulcers in the stomach and gut protecting them from stomach acid and allowing them to heal. It also kills bacteria , including those which are now believed to aggravate ulcers. De-nol increases the synthesis of prostoglandin E, enhances the secretion of bicarbonate, stimulates the activity of the cells protective mechanisms. It increases the stability of mucous membrane in digestive system to the action of pepsin, hydrochloric acid, ferments and salts of the bilious acids. The activity of pepsin and pepsinogen is also decreased.

Indications:

De-nol is used to treat:

  • Duodenal ulcers
  • Gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers)
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach characterized by stomach pain and burning, nausea and excess gas (dyspepsia)
Contraindications and Cautions:

You should not use De-nol:

  • If you have an allergy to any of Bismuth salts
  • If you have any kidney disease
  • Avoid use of aspirin and other salicylates

You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking De-nol if you:

  • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Have any other health problems, such as diabetes, gout, high blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, or heart or blood vessel disease
  • This medicine may discolor the stools, but this is harmless.

Warning!

  • You should not use this medication more than 8 weeks.
  • During the treatment you should not use other medications, containing Bismuth
  • Large doses may lead to confusion, changes in memory and mood, hallucinations, seizures
Side Effects:

These interactions include:

  • Antacids : Tums (R), cimetidine Tagamet(R), famotidine Pepcid(R), ranitidine Zantac(R)
  • Bismuth Subcitrate should not be taken with milk or food. Take it 30 minutes before or 2 hours after meals
