Therapeutic actions:

Acetylsalicylic acid belongs to NSAIDls. It means that it works by blocking COX1 and COX2, resulting in inhibiting the production of prostoglandins(Pg). Pgs are essential substances in inflammatory process. By inhibiting the production of Pg, Acetylsalicylic acid exerts anti inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic effects. It also decreases aggregation, adhesion and blood clot organization due to interference with thromboxane A2 synthesis in platelets.

Indications:

Aspirin is indicated to treat the following conditions:

  • Fever associated with infectious-inflammatory processes
  • Moderate and severe pain of a different origin
  • Prophylaxis of thrombosis and embolia(blood stasis)
  • Myocardial infarction and disorders of the cerebral circulation
Contraindications and Cautions:

Aspirin should not be used in the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of this medication ingredients
  • Erosive and ulcer damage of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Stomach bleeding
  • Asthma related to Acetylsalicylic acid
  • Blood diseases: hemophilia, bleeding diathesis, hypoprothrombinemia,
  • Portal hypertension
  • Avitaminosis K
  • Kidney failure or kidney dysfunction
  • Pregnancy (1 trimester)
  • Breastfeeding
  • In children
  • Deficiency of G6PD¬
  • Liver diseases
Side Effects:

There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Aspirin will experience it or any other.

  • Digestive system: abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation,
  • CNS: tingling, decreased hearing, dizziness, confusion, uneasiness, increased body perspiration
  • Gastrointestinal bleedings
  • Respiratory alkalosis
  • Changes in the blood picture

Interactions:

Do not use Aspirin in combination with anticoagulants and antiplatelets such as clopidogrel or dipyridamole. The risk of bleeding can be increased if Aspirin is used together with other NSAID's

Corticosteroids may also interact with Aspirin increasing the risk of side effects.

Aspirin decreases the efficacy of water pills, drugs used to treat hypertension and antigout medications. It also enhances hypoglycemic effect of the sulphonyl urea therapy and increases the concentrations of Li2+ and methotrexate.
