Therapeutic actions:

Methylprednisolone belongs to a group of synthetic corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are hormones that are naturally produced by the adrenal glands and possesses a wide variety of functions. Methylprednisolone works by inhibiting the release of certain chemicals that are responsible in inflammation or allergic reactions. Methylprednisolone can also reduce numbers of white blood cells. This in its turn, helps to prevent the rejection of organ transplants caused by attacking the foreign tissue by the white blood cells.

Indications:

Metypred is indicated in the following conditions:

  • Endocrine diseases: Primary and secondary insufficiency of the adrenal glands(congenital hyperplasia of the adrenal glands; nonpurulent thyroiditis)
  • Rheumatoid diseases: psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, including juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, spondylarthtiris, acute and subacute bursitis, unspecific tendosynovitis, acute gouty arthritis, post-traumatic osteoarthrosis, synovitis with osteoarthrosis, epicondylitis.
  • Collagenoses: system lupus erythematosis, system dermatomyositis (poly-myositis), acute rheumatic carditis, rheumatic poly-myalgia.
  • Skin diseases: Dermatitis,severe psoriasis, severe seboreic dermatitis.
  • Respiratory system diseases: Symptomatic sarcoidosis, Loeffler syndrom, pulmonary tuberculosis, asthma.
  • Hematologic diseases: idiopathic thrombocytopenia, secondary thrombocytopenia , hemolytic anemia, hypoplastic anemia
  • Digestive diseases: Non specific colitis, enteritis
  • Lymphatic Acute and lymphatic leukemia
  • Lymphoma(Cancer of the lymph nodes)
  • Inflammation of the eye (iritis and optic neuritis)
  • Edema syndrome
  • Hepatitis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Thyroid disease

For the parenteral application:

  • State of shock
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Cerebral edema
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Acute insufficiency of the adrenal glands
  • Thyroid crisis
  • Acute hepatitis
  • Hepatic coma
Contraindications and Cautions:

Do not use this medication if you have hypersensitivity or allergy to Methylprednisolone.

  • Do not use Metypred if you suffer from infection caused by fungi.
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking Metypred if you experience the following conditions:

  • In children
  • In elderly people
  • Muscle weakness
  • Infection that produces pus
  • Kidney diseases
  • Diabetes or family history of diabetes
  • Seizures related to epilepsy
  • Glaucoma or family history of glaucoma
  • Congestive Heart failure
  • Eye infection caused by Herpes simplex virus
  • Hypertension
  • Mental disorder
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Post-menopausal women
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Diverticulitis
  • Colitis
  • Liver diseases(cirrhosis or liver failure)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Muscle disease caused by steroids
  • Intestinal anastomosis
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Tuberculosis

Warning!

  • Avoid prolonged use of Metypred
  • Do not use chickenpox vaccine while taking Metypred
  • Do not suddenly stop taking Metypred
  • You can experience high blood pressure while taking this medication.
  • Metypred can mask the symptoms of some infections.
Side Effects:

There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Metypred will experience it or any other.

The most common side effects include:

  • Increased blood sugar level
  • Increased appetite and weight gain.
  • Increased sensitivity to infections and increased severity of infections (see warnings above).
  • Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dyspepsia
  • Ulceration or thrush infection in the throat.
  • Muscle weakness or wasting.
  • Thinning of the bones (osteoporosis) and increased risk of breaking a bone.
  • Effects on the skin, such as skin thinning, impaired healing, acne, bruising, stretch marks, increased sweating, change in pigmentation, increased hair growth (hirsutism).
  • Psychiatric reactions, such as mood changes (including irritability, depression and suicidal thoughts), psychotic reactions (including mania, delusions and hallucinations), anxiety, confusion, memory loss, sleep disturbances (see warning above).
  • Cushing's syndrome, characterized by a moon-shaped face.
  • Menstrual disturbances.
  • Sodium and water retention.
  • Hypertension
  • Decrease in the level of potassium in the blood.
  • Decrease in the production of natural steroids by the adrenal glands
  • Effects on the eyes, such as raised pressure inside the eye (glaucoma)
  • Cataracts.
  • Slowed growth in children and adolescents.
  • Hiccups.
  • Blood clots in the blood vessels (thromboembolism).

Metypred may interact with the following medications:

  • Medicines for hypertension treatment(ACE inhibitors, Calcium Blockers, betablockers)
  • Water pills(diuretics)
  • Acetazolamide
  • Amphotericin
  • Beta agonists including salbutamol, salmeterol, terbutaline
  • Carbenoxolone
  • Potassium-losing diuretics, incuding furosemide(Lasix)
  • Theophylline
  • Antidiabetic medications
  • Blood thinners
  • NSAID's
  • barbituates, eg amobarbital, phenobarbital
  • carbamazepine
  • phenytoin
  • primidone
  • rifabutin
  • rifampicin
  • mifepristone
  • aprepitant
  • ciclosporin
  • diltiazem
  • itraconazole
  • ketoconazole
  • macrolide-type antibiotics, eg clarithromycin, erythromycin
  • protease inhibitors, eg ritonavir.
