Kivexa
Therapeutic actions:

Kivexa is an antiviral medication based on a combination of two different nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors: abacavir - indicated to treat HIV-1 infections and lamivudine - an inhibitor of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 reverse transcriptase.

HIV affects human immune system by annihilating CD4 T-helper lymphocytes. The virus produces the viral RNA which becomes embedded into our DNA; this process occurs in the presence of reverse intracellular enzymes. After being metabolized, abacavir and lamivudine come to act as active monophosphate metabolites which set in the viral DNA chain and break it, while blocking the action of reverse intracellular enzyme. The desired effect of the chain terminator of DNA synthesis and inhibitor of HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme is to impede further viral progression.
